350 Youth Volunteers Arriving for Mission Omaha

Nearly 50 Homes will be Repaired, Renovated During Week-long Mission

OMAHA – They’re coming from across the country to put in a week’s-worth of hard work that will benefit more than 50 homeowners during the third Mission Omaha youth workcamp beginning Sunday, June 16.  The youth will be arriving at Grave University between noon and 4pm on the 16th.

Almost 350 young people will help on projects that range from painting to building wheelchair ramps. The 2013 Mission Omaha concludes Friday, June 21.  The youth are coming from 10 different states including California, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, and Colorado.

“We saw the benefit to the city’s elderly, disabled and low-income residents during our second Mission Omaha two summers ago,” says Mary Rosenthal of Mission Omaha Foundation, Inc. “This year we’ve attracted just many young volunteers to hopefully do just as much good work.”

Representative Lee Terry will welcome the volunteers during the opening night program Sunday evening, 7pm in the Grace University gymnasium.

The Omaha Fire Department will be installing CO2 detectors in these homes during the week as well.

Rosenthal (402-490-3410) would also be happy to arrange interviews with volunteers and homeowners.

Local charities are partnering with Mission Omaha for the 2013 workcamp, including Catholic CharitiesNP Dodge's agent driven charity, Dodge Cares, has also partnered with Mission Omaha on many levels again this year.

Mission Omaha project summary:

Non-profit Mission Omaha Foundation partners with Group Workcamps Foundation and several local charities to bring the hundreds of adults and teenage volunteers to the Omaha area and provide home repairs.

The workcamp follows strict guidelines. To qualify for assistance the resident must be elderly, low-income, and or/disabled; the home should have obvious need of repair; the resident should own the home; the resident or another responsible adult must be home during the week of the workcamp; and the work environment must be safe for teens.

There is a limit to the work participants are allowed to do, including painting, limited construction and weatherization. Volunteers are not allowed to do any electrical, plumbing, heating or any roof repairs; floor tiling, or repairs to windows, doors or gutters.

This is a faith-based project for teens to grow closer with God and build healthy relationships while repairing homes for those in need. More information about the workcamp may be obtained at www.missionomaha.com.

Mission Omaha Foundation, Inc. exists to provide opportunities for Christians to deepen their spiritual awareness by bringing them together with people in need in the Omaha area. By promoting service over self, the Foundation gives Christians from throughout the United States the chance to share the love of Jesus Christ by improving the living conditions of Omaha’s elderly, disabled, and economically disadvantaged residents.

Mission Omaha Foundation, Inc. is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) public charity.
